Nabanarayan Bandyopadhyay (DOB 29.10.1954), Professor of Vedic Studies and Director of the School of Vedic Studies, former Head, Department of Sanskrit, holds uniformly a brilliant academic record, teaches Sanskrit and Vedic literature, and pursues research on Vedic and Mimamsa studies. Since 1980 he has taught as lecturer in Sanskrit in Bangabasi College, Kolkata and joined Rabindra Bharati University as lecturer in Sanskrit in 1984. In 1989 he became Reader in Vedic Studies in the School of Vedic Studies and was appointed Professor of Vedic Studies and Director of the School on 18.08.2006 and continuing in that post. He was appointed twice Visiting Fellow in the Dept of Sanskrit, Tripura University.
- There are a lot of published research papers and books to his credit. Some of the edited books and journals include Ancient Indian Views on Truth and Falsity; Mimamsaparibhasa; Bengal's Contribution to Vedic Studies; Laghu-Yajnaparsva-Parisista and Mahad-Yajnaparsva-Parisista; Vedic Studies, Vols. Ill, IV, V; Samkalpa, Nos. 1, 2, 3, etc. Besides contribution of the papers in the journals, viz, Rabindra Bharati Patrika, Vedic Studies, Journal of the Dept. of Sanskrit, his are the publications of papers in prestigious volumes like Concept of Government as Reflected in Ancient Sanskrit Literature, Kolkata, 2004; Ess ai sur la Indologica, Kolkata, 2009,; Studies on theSiksas and the Pratiskhyas, Pune, 2010; Science and Technology in Ancient Indian Texts, New Delhi, 2032, etc.
He has regularly conducted/ participated in many minor and major research projects, viz, Critical Edition of Some Unpublished Vedic Texts, Cultural Index of Vedic Literature, Proper Names of Persons in Vedic Literature, Scientific Thoughts and Components in Vedic Literature. A project on Vedic Ancillary Texts on Phonetics has recently been undertaken by the School under his leadership. He is a reputed manuscriptologist and is regulary instructing on this new area of study in different parts of India. He has successfully supervised candidates for earning their Ph.D. degrees from this University contributing much in the field of ancient Indian war and war-strategy, criminar laws, Tagore Studies, etc. He evalutated many Ph.D/ M.Phil dissertations of different Universities. He himself is working on editing unpublished Vedic texts on the basis of manuscripts. He has been awarded many prizes, medals, etc. in view of his recognition as a meritorious student and distingushed researcher.
He has visited Hungary, Finland, and Japan and participated in a number of state-level, national, international seminars, symposia, workshops, conferences, refresher courses etc. and presented learned papers, delivered lectures and chaired many academic sessions.
He is a life member and/or Patron of various learned institutions/bodies, namely, The Asiatic Society, Kolkata; Sanskrit Sahitya Parishat, Kolkata; All India Oriental conference, Pune; Pracya-manisa-gavesana Mandiram, New Delhi; Vadakke Matham Brahmasvam, Thrissur; Sri Sri Sitaramdas Omkarnath Samskrita Siksa Samsad, Kolkata, etc. He happens to be a Referee to the Journal of the Dept. of Sanskrit of Gauhati University. Besides being the Head of the Dept. of Sanskrit and Director of the School of Vedic Studies, he has discharged his administrative and academic duties and responsibilities as a member of the Faculty Council of the Post-graduate Studies in Arts, The Executive Council and The Court of this University, Board of Studies and Higher Degrees Committee for Sanskrit, the University Planning Board and the Finance Committee, etc.
