Prof. Dr Somnath Sinha is a theatre persona having trained under personalities like Suresh Dutta, Tapas Sen, Khaled Choudhury from a very tender age. He travelled extensively with Calcutta Puppet Theatre (CPT) and performed at all the National and International festivals of Theatre. He was closely associated with the All India Radio, where he worked under the supervision of Bela De, Upen Tarafdar and Debdulal Bandyopadhyay.
He took up Drama academics at Rabindra Bharati University and was under the tutelage of Jogesh Dutta, Manoj Mitra, Ganesh Mukherjee, Tarun Roy, Kumar Roy and others. His specialization area is on the Theatre of the Tagore family, for which he had been awarded the PhD degree under Prof. Arun Kumar Basu. At present he is the Professor in the Department of Drama and Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts. Under his supervision 10 scholars have been awarded the PhD degree and 4 are working at present. He has two books to his credit- one on the Theatre of Tagore family and the other on the Theatre of South East Asia.
Before joining the Department of Drama, his notable Theatre productions based on Tagore are Bicharak and Prayaschitta. He also directed different productions in the Department of Drama. He also directed a number of Tele productions for the University. To pursue his creative talents, he is engaged as a conceptual artist and director of Sruti Performing Troupe, where he experiments with theatrical productions through acting and body gestures on rhythm and expression. The inclusion of Dance in theatrical productions has been his identity throughout the creative efforts and has made a mark in the theatre dance field of Bengal. He has also visited Germany, Czech, Poland, Korea, South Africa, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh where he performed, studied, delivered lectures and worked with eminent personalities.
