Established on March 8, 2008 as a Centre devoted to women’s issues and causes, The Women’s Studies Centre of Rabindra Bharati University was recognised by the University Grants Commission in January, 2010. From the very beginning, it works as a truly inter- disciplinary unit. It aims to undertake research, teaching, and action in a holistic way incorporating women’s experiences and problems in every sphere. It proposes to look at every problem — academic or otherwise — through gender lens, and thereby imparts traditional academic disciplines to look at matters from gender perspectives. It does not, however, wish to segregate women’s studies to counter traditional academic disciplines, but tries to enrich all by integrating women’s experiences.
Its principal thrust areas have been the problems of the marginalized women in every sector of the society, be they dalit, tribal, minority, migrant, sex-worker or similar other group. Another noteworthy feature of the Centre has been looking at the different art forms like painting, dance, music, drama, sculpture etc through a gender lens and integrating them with humanities, language and social science.
The major objectives of the Centre have been, inter alia, undertaking research on women’s studies in vernacular (Bengali) language; participating in the policy-making process of different government/semi-government/non-government bodies/organizations and disseminating knowledge on a wider horizon beyond the immediate scope of teachers and students involved in women’s studies
