To execute the decision of the Research Cell Meeting held on 12.02.2014 to conduct a Research Week involving the registered Ph.D candidates of the University, the first phase of the Research Week was held from June 16 to June 20, 2014. The broad theme of the Research Week has been framed as New Frontiers in Research in the Contemporary World. The response to the notification of this Research Week asking Ph.D scholars to submit their abstracts and details was so overwhelming that the Academic Committee involved in chalking out the plan of this workshop under the Convenor-ship of Prof. Soumitra Basu, decided to phase out the entire initiative tentatively into three phases. The first phase (June 16 – June 20, 2014) had approximately 70 participants and they were selected on the basis of their seniority in the Ph.D. programme – subsequently scholars registered in the years 2009 & 2010 were enlisted for the first phase. The programmes were structured into both lecture and workshop format wherein barring the first and last day, the first session was kept for lectures and the second session for workshops. The Keynote Address was delivered by Sri Ranjan Chakraborty, Honourable Vice Chancellor of Vidyasagar University and the Valedictory Address was delivered by Prof. Kalpana Kannabiran, Regional Director, Council for Social Development, Southern Regional Centre, Hyderabad. It was a conscious attempt on behalf of the Academic Committee to first, infuse a sense of interdisciplinary approach in research conducted in this University and second, provide a broad idea of the emerging vistas of research in the contemporary period. Accordingly, experts were selected and invited from outside as well as from the University. Resource persons spanned from various parts of the country and the state and also from various fields of Fine Arts and Visual Arts as it was also the objective of this programme to give an exposure of scholastic orientations of other academic institutions and experts of this country. Workshops were conducted in three parallel sessions by external experts where participants would get the scope of interacting with them on a one-to-one basis. Three workshop groups were formed for this purpose. Experts who enriched the programmes included Prof. Nrisingha Prasad Bhaduri, Prof. Chidananda Bhattacharya, Prof. Sumit Chakraborty, Prof. Rakesh Chandra, Prof. Biswajit Roy, Prof. Ratan Khasnabis, Prof. Sujata Mukherjee, Prof. Dwaipayan Bhattacharya, Prof. Pradip Kumar Bose, Prof. Pabitra Sarkar, Prof. Mohua Mukherjee, Prof. Sunil Kothari, Prof. Kalyan Kumar Chakraborty, Prof. Pranab Ranjan Roy, Prof. Shreyasi Chatterjee, Prof. R. Siva Kumar, and Prof. Taran Kumar Biswas. Certificates were distributed to the participants after the successful completion of the five-day programme. However, distribution of certificates to the participants was made conditional to their full-fledged attendance to the five-day programme. Feedback forms were distributed to acquire an opinion from the participants of the entire programme. This feedback is expected to be helpful in preparing for the second phase.
